It Was Gone in a Flash...
"It was gone in a flash..."
Madhuri looked up at the sky as she said those words.
"What was gone, Ma?" her daughter Indira asked.
Madhuri smiled gently.
"Time."
But she knew she had not told the truth.
What she really wanted to say was,
"Life."
It felt like only yesterday that she was just like Indira.
She rushed to college every morning, laughed with friends, shared dreams, made plans for the future and believed life was just beginning.
Then she fell in love.
She got married.
She built a family.
She became a mother.
Life became a long list of responsibilities.
One day, she stood in front of the mirror and suddenly realised that somewhere along the way, the young woman called Madhuri had quietly disappeared.
Now, climbing a single flight of stairs left her breathless.
Her favourite sari no longer fitted.
She worked all day, yet somehow felt tired all the time.
Her doctor had prescribed medicine for high blood pressure.
Before she left the clinic, he had gently added,
"You should try to lose some weight."
He was right.
But how?
The clinic was busy.
The consultation was short.
There simply wasn't enough time to ask the next question.
Madhuri worried less about herself.
She worried about Indira.
These days, her daughter spent most of her time with books, her mobile phone and her laptop.
There was no running.
No games.
No evening walks.
Slowly, almost unnoticed, Indira was gaining weight too.
One day, Madhuri read in a newspaper that excess weight could increase the risk of conditions such as PCOS, diabetes, high blood pressure and even future fertility problems.
That evening, she finally gathered the courage to say,
"Indu... I think you should lose a little weight."
Indira looked at her mother and smiled.
"How, Ma?"
Madhuri remained silent.
Because she did not know the answer.
Perhaps that question does not belong only to Madhuri.
It belongs to thousands of families.
